Today we are focusing on beauty and fashion. We are so privileged to be able to work and rub shoulders with so many talented vendors in our industry and the vendors that helped us style our bride and groom are some of the best!

ubbspring-86
Let’s get started with quite possibly the most important decision a bride has to make when planning her wedding; the DRESS!
Alta Moda Bridal provided a gorgeous low back dress by designer Hayley Paige. We love the gorgeous beading and the soft feminine feel of the dress. We had Hilary Anderson, owner of Alta Moda, give us a brief description of the dress.dress1 dress2
We love this gown for a Spring wedding because it has a soft romance about it. The silky, sheer flounces are easy to wear, light-weight and soft, whereas the beaded shoulder and key-hole back detail add a delicate touch of glamour. It has the just-right amount of sophistication, while still being fresh, warm, and feminine.dress3 dress4 dress5To go with the gorgeous dress, our bride is wearing cute flats provided by Yosi Samra. We are smitten with these flats, not only are they super comfortable but they are also stylish! The metallic colors are right on trend for weddings!ubbspring-199 ubbspring-203Now let’s not forget the groom! Grooms often get out-shined, but there is no way he will be forgotten in a custom suit! We loved having our groom wear a custom navy suit made by H.M. Cole. Custom suits can make all the difference for a groom, not to mention he will have a chance to feel special too! We asked H.M. Cole to tell us a little more about their company and the awesome suit worn by our groom.ubbspring-223

H.M.Cole provides the opportunity for all men to enjoy the experience of being fitted for custom made clothing. We send a style consultant to you to accurately measure your body using over 20 different measurements to create the perfect fitting suit.  The customizations are nearly endless as you build your perfect suit.
suit
Featured here is a custom electric blue two-button suit. This color is becoming the new navy and is perfect for a spring or summer wedding. It also looks great in a suit or a tuxedo. The peanut brown shoes are also a great way to make the suit stand out and give the groom a little more attention then they are used to getting, and deservedly so when dressed so well.ubbspring-224To finish off our day of beauty and fashion we will have the lovely Gabby Gabbitas tell us about the beautiful hair and make-up adorned by our bride!ubbspring-179To compliment the open back dress and Kenzie’s neck line, I began with a romantic thought in mind to casually lift her hair while showing off her neck line. Lifting her hair into a structured chignon formalized the up-style, while the casual lower drape in the back eludes to the romance of the look.beautyFor Kenzie’s makeup, I wanted to extract deep, rich and romantic colors from the spring palette while staying true to the pantones present. By utilizing deeper rich spring colors such as plum tones to soften smoky eyes, we further accentuate the romance of the hair piece. Darker royal colors such as plums always takes us back to the romantic era’s of the past. Matching the plum tones I lighten the pallet for her cheeks and lips by blending softer pinks and berry tones together.beauty2
A casually structured chignon, paired with light plum tones, and you’ve created a classic romantic look, that can remain timeless.ubbspring-217

We asked our each of our vendors to write up a little bit about what they did to make our bride look even more beautiful!

THE DRESS:
“Claire Pettibone is the premier designer of romantic wedding gowns.  Her trademark style of sheath gowns that skim the curves of your body will take his breath away, and the hand crafted lace will make this a dress to remember.

For the hair I wanted to create something that would accentuate the style of the dress.  I felt that a soft crown of braids was very befitting.
For the makeup I wanted to keep everything feeling very fresh.  For her skin I applied an illuminator to give her a dewy glow. Her eyes were kept soft and natural. Then I added a pop of glamour with a bright pink lip.” –Gabbi Gabitas

How to wear red lipstick

red-lipstick

So you’d like to have a crimson pout but don’t think you can pull if off? Well think again! Here are some helpful tips to finding that inner siren.

which hue are you?
The perfect red might take a few tries to find, but let your skin tone be your guide. Do you have cool or a warm tone?  Cool complexions are pale with pink undertones and tend to burn easily in the sun.  Whereas warm complexions have yellow, olive or darker undertones and tan easier in the sun.
Cooler complexions you should choose a blue based red, pinkish red or a true red tone.
Warmer complexions should choose reds with an orange, gold or coral tone.

How to apply:

First get lips super smooth by exfoliating.(Red chapped dry lips wont look very pretty.) Dust a little loose powder on lips to give the lipstick something to grab onto.  Line and fill in lips with a liner that closely matches lipstick color.  Apply lipstick and blot with a tissue for extra staining.  Go easy on the rest of your makeup.  There is no faster way to ruin a sexy red lip than by it compete with your eye makeup and blush.
The secret weapon is really just being comfortable and feeling confident to back it up.  So stand up straight and smile

My favorite colors:

MAC: Brick for a lipliner, Crazed, Ruby Woo, Russian Red New York Red Apple for lipstick, Rue D’ Rouge for lipgloss, and Persist for a lip-stain.
Nars: Jungle Red, Heat Wave for lipstick and Red Square for lip pencil.

Do you have a favorite red lipstick? I am always looking for new colors to try.

If you’ve ever gone to the store in search of the perfect hair dryer, you may have found yourself overwhelmed by all the styles, shapes and sizes that line the shelves. Here are some helpful hints on how to find the best hair dryer to meet your needs. The first step is to become familiar with the different types of hair dryers so you can find one that meets your needs. A few General ground rules: Dryers with wattages above 1500 watts tend to work best (though there are exceptions, as you’ll see below)

Look for a dryer with multiple heat/speed settings (4-6 is pretty standard these days), and for a cool shot button to lock the hair in place after it’s been heat styled.
Make sure your dryer comes with a nozzle attachment, which will concentrate the air as you blow dry

Prices Inexpensive hair dryers ($5 to $25) can be found in almost any store. While they may be inexpensive when you first purchase them, they can cost you a great deal when it comes to hair damage. Another danger in the cheaper models is that they don’t often have fan cages, your hair can get pulled into the fan. Moderately expensive hair dryers ($30 to $80) come equipped with most of the settings that you will need for daily use.  Most feature multiple temperature settings and a cool blast button for drying dry brittle hair or for setting curl.  Most people with “normal” hair can do well with these dryers – and the good news is that they’re becoming more sophisticated and developing some of the features from more of the expensive models, like ionic and ceramic technology. Professional hair dryers ($80 to $100 – plus) can be purchased at a beauty supply store, a salon or through a professional web site.  While these dryers are geared toward repeated use by professionals, they can be very  beneficial at home if you are willing to pay the price. Many of these professional dryers are quiet and feature new drying technologies such as ionic and ceramic energy to cut your hair drying time in half. They produce negative ions that diffuse the water molecules on the hair into micro fine particles, improving the hair’s moisture balence and enhancing shine while reducing frizz. Once you choose your price point, the next step is to narrow down the different models.  To do so, look for some of the bells and whistles that could be highly beneficial to your hair type of hair.

bio-ionic-powerlight-dryer-white

Ionic dryers Ions are hot these days in the world of hair dryers.  They are charged particles, each of which contains either a positive charge or a negative charge. Positive charges, from the common blow dryer cause the cuticle covering of the hair shaft to open, causing the frizzies and a dull appearance. Conventional dryers have a standard rope heater that heats the perimeter of the airflow.  The addition of a ceramic heater provides even heat distribution to help prevent hot spots and hair damage when styling. The ceramic heater is self regulating and turns itself down as it senses the surrounding temperature.  Because ceramic dryers are self-regulating they don’t need multiple temperature controls, usually just low and high. Ceramic dryers are also said to reduce bacteria formation, resulting in a healthier scalp. They also prepare hair to resist the effects of weather conditions, help create lustrous hair that feels freshly conditioned and produce a high-heat drying effect at a low temperature than your conventional dryer.

Tourmaline Dryers Several dryers are using ground tourmaline in their heating mechanisms, which boosts the ionic power of the dryer and slashes drying time and static.

Here a few of my favorites:

T3 Tourmaline feather weight professional dryer: ($199) combines ionic super powers of tourmaline, plus it uses infrared heat, which helps dry the hair from the inside of the cuticle out, thus not frying the outer layer of the cuticle. Bio Ionic Powerlight: ($120) Powerful airflow (1875W) for faster drying without damage, Conditioning Nano Beads accelerate drying and promote shiny, soft, hydrated hair and also has far infrared technology. Babybliss Pro Cermanic: ($70) Ionic and Porcelain Ceramic™ technology, 6 heat/speed settings, Cold shot button.

How long do beauty products last?

We all have our favorite tried and true lipstick that has been discontinued (and just what was that makeup company thinking!) But how long is to long to hold on to our cosmetics? Here are the guidelines that tell you when your product has gone bad.

First off, if it smells, stinks has a distinct odor that should not be, throw it away! If you can’t remember when you purchased it, trash it.  Makeup should not stir up memories from ten years ago.
Cosmetics:
Mascara: 4 months
Eyeliner: 2 years
Eyeshadow: 2-3 years
Cream eyeshadow: 12-18 months
Blush and bronzer: 12-18 months
Cream blush: 12-18 months
Lipstick and lipliner: 2 years
Lipstick: 18-24 months
Foundation: 1 year
Also remember to replace sponges monthly and to be washing your makeup brushes every 2-3 months.
Skin care products:
Face wash/cleanser: 1 year
Toner: 2 years
Eye cream: 1 year
Face moisturizer: 1 year
Hair products:
Can be kept unopened for up to 3 years (but who would want to?) However once you open them, the clock starts ticking on an 18 month shelf life.
Remember to clean out your hair brushes. Remove excess hair out with a pick often. Four times a year soak in bathroom sink with a 1/2 cup of baking soda. This will help break down any gels or mouses on brush. Rinse and let air dry.
Also don’t forget to clean out the filter on your hair dryer either. Simply remove the back grill and filter screen.  The filter feels like nylon netting; lots of holes for air circulation. Rinse the filter in cool water.  Don’t stretch it while cleaning it.  Let fully dry before using again.
Helpful tips:
Wash hands before use
Store products in cabinet and out of direct sun
Be sure to tighten and secure lid after use
Toss products if change in color, consistency or smell
Write the date of purchase in permanent ink on bottom of package.
PHEW! I know thats a lot of work to do! But you will surely get the most out of all of your products by following these guidelines. Good luck

First off let me just wow! I never thought that I would be excited about shaving cream, Until I discovered this brand.  I found it online and can not get enough of this stuff!  Do you ever have moments when your thinking to your self “Did I really just shave my legs for this?!” (I Know I do!) Well I have recently found a reason to want to shave my legs.  All the credit and motivation goes to this little product.  I bought it in the blueberry flavor.  Oh my gosh it smells so good that it makes me kind of want to eat it.

Screen shot 2013-04-15 at 4.45.06 PM

I know know.. it sounds silly! I’m just used to shaving being such a drying affair. But this product is an incredibly luscious surprise.  The thick whipped mousse helps you get a close shave and leaves your skin feeling soft smooth and hydrated.

Screen shot 2013-04-15 at 4.45.50 PM

It’s priced at $20 and you can buy it from Whishbody.com.

It comes in a variety of different flavors:

Common skin myths

Beautiful-skin-model1

Are you approaching your skin routine all wrong? Here are some common blunders that could be sabotaging your skin complexion.

Myth:  A complete skin care routine must contain three steps.
Truth: Cleanse, tone, then moisturize have been drilled into our heads, but feel free to skip the second step. People think that toning oily skin will make it better, but the oil is protective and the body produces it in response to injury. When you strip your skin of all the oils, it responds by making more grease.
Myth: Over the counter products with Retinol work just fine.
Truth: Retinol is basically a mild vitamin A treatment that slowly absorbs into the skin and is eventually converted into Retatonic acid. (Retinol is a great ingredient for acne and anti aging.) The over the counter brands are not effective enough because the the Retinol oxidizes before it can make it into the skin.
Myth: Dryness causes fine lines.
Truth: People confuse dryness and flaking with wrinkles.  Just moisturizing will make wrinkles look better.  The lines are still there, but you wont be able to see them anymore.
Myth: You should use your mother’s eye cream.
Truth:  Everyone has different skin issues, so one size does not fit all.  If you have puffiness choose a gel (heavy creams can boost swelling.) with caffeine. If you have dark circles, look for a product with a lightening ingredient in it like vitamin C.
Myth: Leaving a mask on over night will give you more for your money.
Truth: Masks deliver a potent dose of active ingredients or moisturize quickly into the skin.  So you can over do it, causing irritation or breakouts.  Always use the product as directed.
Myth: Wearing foundation or a tinted moisturizer with an SPF means your being sun safe:
Truth: You need to wear an SPF of at least 30 on your face everyday.  So unless your slathering on a mask of makeup, your not getting enough protection.
Myth: the more wrinkle cream you apply the better the result.
Truth: Morning and night time applications are a waste of money.  Most active ingredients work well once a day and anti aging creams should be worn at night because the active ingredients are broken down by sunlight.
Also a big reminder that we all need to be better about wearing sunscreen! Using tanning oil with an SPF of 10 does not count!!!
Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to our neck and chest areas too.

GHD flat iron VS. CHI flat iron

28 Thursday Mar 2013

beauty, CHI, flat iron, GHD, hair, Hair care, Heat

Straight hair, curly hair, curls done with a flat iron…. There’s so much you can choose from for styling your hair. The best part is, is there’s so much you can do with one good flat iron. A good flat iron is hardly that difficult to find these days. There are so many brands to choose from, but there is a constant dispute regarding GHD and Chi brand flat irons. Which one really is the better of the two? How about a little comparison to help you determine? Here goes…

Technology:

The GHD flat iron comes with an internal microprossecor that allows even heating over the ceramic plate, avoiding “hot spots.” The benefit from this technology is that it will protect your hair and will not over heat it.

The Chi flat iron comes with an integrated Nano Silver technology which is meant to help add shine to the hair and also sterilezes and kills bacteria.

Heat:

The GHD heats up to 370 degrees in 15 seconds and it will beap to alert you when it is hot and ready.

The Chi heats up to 370 degrees as well but not as quickly. It takes roughly about a minute as opposed to a few seconds.

Design:

GHD iron has the control button on the inside of the iron on the bottom.

Chi has the control botton on the outside on the bottom of the iron. Which sometimes can be frustrating if you accidently bump the switch off when styling your hair.

Power:

The GHD has a 9 foot cord, it has an automatic feature where after of sleep mode. After 30 minutes of not being used, it automatcily will shut it self off. So it’s a great endergy saver and you don’t have to get to worry about getting all the way to work and wondering if you turned your flat iron off or not. It also has an auto-international voltage use. Which is great if you travel to other countries.

The Chi has a 10 foot cord, which is a little bit more convenient for styling the back of your hair. But does not have any additional features.

Price:

The GHD retails for around $180-200.

The Chi retails for around $100.

Well ladies and gents those are the facts. Now I am going to give you my own two cents. I have used both both styling irons. For years i was a devoted customer to Chi brand and I thought I would never use anything else. About six months ago my Chi of four years died. So naturally I went out and bought the exact same one. I was very dissapointed by the iron! It just didn’t glide through the hair the same way my old one did. So I returned it. I think there is something to be said for a product that becomes too overly produced. You now can find a Chi iron in Costco and Target stores. I just don’t think the quality is there anymore.

Then I ended up stumbing into a GHD styling class at a local beauty suppy store. I was at first hesistant because of the price of the iron but I sat for an hour at the demo and was completely blown away! The model of the class had completly trashed, damaged hair and the iron really did smooth it out into silk. So needless to say I am deffiantely a fan of the GHD now!
